ULTRA budget design ideas

Some of you who’ve followed this blog for a while might remember the post about my brother’s house last summer. Joacim and his wife Lisa decided to live a more bohemian lifestyle out in the country, and a couple of years ago bought a house for $ 30,000.

They proceeded in turning a home with no running water in the woods, in to a place where they live full time with their family. When visiting there for my nice Zoe’s 2nd birthday, I was impressed with all the clever ultra budget design tips that I found all around!

Every single piece of furniture and most clothing is bought second hand. They perused vintage shops or Sweden’s version of the Craig’s list. You can find EVERYTHING on it! You can check it out- colored text is a link…

This is adorable sweet Zoe.  She is a very funny, determined young lady at two.

I of course couldn’t help myself from sneaking photos of their house here and there. The ultra budget tips started at the front door.  While they’re waiting for the right time to build a wood deck they had a quick solution…

Instead of building a new one.

The plastic woven carpet that was given to them in a second hand store adds welcoming warmth and graphics.

Another area filled with simple tips is the guest sleeping loft in the living room…

Again…

They mixed old Swedish vintage pieces with 70’s style pieces.

In their guest sleeping loft they used another budget trick…

And the next one is something most people forget they can do!!!t

It’s much cheaper to paint the floor than hiring professionals to stain and refinish a floor.  And selecting a strong color, in this case red,  is a sure fire way to avoid seeing any imperfections. This is to me a great example on how to save money, by using color the right way!

Instead of building dividers…

They simply used matchstick blinds, which gives it an earthy vibe with all the colors.

An old broken down chair gets completely new life…

Lisa loves to sow so she upholstered this chair by herself!!

The living room has bold orange, red and yellow Marimekko accents. Save money on art?

Art can be anything you love.  What a great idea to hang a pretty vintage tablecloth!

The simplest and best trick of all….

Fresh branches, plants from our garden bring the outdoors in. Of course an urn found in a second hand store.

And last but but not least…

…who needs expensive toys when you can just buy a soccer goal?

P.S. In case you want to read some of my design thoughts and background, here is a link to a Designer Spotlight interview today.

Thanks Anne!

  1. Love the tips you shared! The fabric/tablecloth as art thing works great – I also like to use rugs on the walls when art is scarce 🙂

  2. Creativity and personality clearly runs in the family! And Zoe is adorable!

I saw "designer" plastic runner rugs everywhere in Stockholm. Practical, yes, but I can't decide if I like them or not. Curious to hear what yo have to say.

  4. Actually you have really beautiful home, though the design was simple but I see the effort on how they work with the home interiors and you have also attractive home decorations that make the house looks better.
