Think outside of the box!

I’m a big believer in expressing yourself with interiors. Your home is there for you. It’s there to bring you comfort and shelter, and to make you happy every day of your life.  If it doesn’t – do something about it! It’s not the size of your home or the ability to buy expensive things, that makes a great home.  It’s your imagination, and the freedom you allow yourself to express who you are and how you want to live that makes a great home.

I don’t believe in following trends.

I don’t like to follow any decorating “rules” that exist – they’re there only to see if they can be successfully broken.

And colors….forget about where certain colors are expected to go. They can go anywhere.

Life is short. Live with what you love AND live the way that makes you happy!  To hopefully inspire people to “think outside of the box” I intend to regularly start posting unusual design ideas you can do in your home.

1. PAINT THE KITCHEN CABINETS AN UNUSUAL COLOR.

Designer Zac Posen’s condo design in New York.

Why do we always go for white kitchen cabinets? Because it’s been ingrained in our brains that’s what they’re supposed to look like? Because it’s harder to get bored and tired of white?

I don’t know… But why not go for a color?

A lavender kitchen. Why not?  It’s pretty peaceful. I like it. Paint your cabinets!

You want a kitchen that will never bore you when you enter it?   Paint it in imaginary ways. NO ONE will notice cheap cabinets, or bad layouts with a paint job like this.  And why ignore the floor and the ceiling?  Or how about testing it a little bit. Paint the ceiling and the floor but leave the cabinets white…or try it the other way around.

2. USE DIFFERENT COLORED CHAIRS AROUND YOUR DINING TABLE

Not so unusual but a fun way to break up a boring dining set. Use different colors and different chairs.

3.  WALL PAPER THE BATHROOM WITH PRINTS AND NEWSPAPERS.

Why ignore a small powder room? Use prints from magazines, books…this could be a really inexpensive way to add character.

4. WALLPAPER EVEN THE SMALLEST CLOSET.

This is one of my favorite things. A small little nondescript closet becomes special spot. Wouldn’t this make getting dressed more special?

And perhaps encourage you to keep it organized?

  1. wow — thanks for this colorful inspiration! I must say, however, the red and black kitchen would drive me MAD in short order, but the rest of the rooms are wonderful!

  2. I like the idea of colored cabinetry. I would never do it, but I admire someone who would! Did you see the bright lime green kitchen that was in either Elle Decor or HB this summer? I think I posted it on my blog. Not for the timid!
