The well packed Mystery Box

A box arrived this weekend, and I couldn’t remember what is was.

I have so many items shipped here for clients, and my company, that sometimes it slips my mind what has been ordered. Dan said he heard a BIG bang as the trucker quickly dropped it in the front yard, and he worried it might be broken.

Hmm…it was big and it said FRAGILE on it!

I just couldn’t remember what this would be. Sometimes I have smaller items shipped here for clients to check on colorways etc. before installing.

Hmm….

Dan offered to open it. It appeared to be endless hard foam, and bubble wrap to keep whatever was inside from being damaged.

While Dan was working away out front, I wandered around to check out the Wisteria that I planted two years ago on the pergola on the terrace. ( Don’t you love it when someone else unpacks..??)

It’s finally BLOOMING!! I love Wisteria.

I’m excited it’s already growing up and giving shade to the outdoor dining area. I can’t handle the hot sun and heat here in the summer time, so this will add the perfect shade…and the color is amazing.

Meanwhile Dan is feverishly working away…

Oh I think I know what it is….

It’s the custom designed purple and lucite piano bench!!!

Very well packed!!

Ironically the same color as I was just enjoying.

Lavender purple.

Voila! The purple velvet piano bench. Much better than the standard black piano bench.

And I had it done the perfect height to play piano.

Now I just have to figure out where to store all the music note books.

Of course all the animals need to test it before we do.  Bubba the professional product tester is first.

Now the top of the piano and the rest has to get the right accessories.

But while we’re enjoying the bench….

…I can’t stop thinking about the trash. I feel like Andy Mc Dowell in “Sex lies and videotape” I can’t stop worrying about the trash. Where will this go?  A landfill?

It’s just so much trash for only one bench!

Can we ship items with less material and hope it arrives unscathed?  Should you only buy local??

How can I reuse it? DO you ever worry about this?

  1. Great post. And love the flowers. Sure I bother about the trash. And I am sure many other do too. Especially in these days when we know how the way we live is hurting our planet. So. What to do? Well, the naturally given solution is of course be to consume less. To choose wisely when we buy something so that it can do it´s job for a long time withou having to be replaced. Or to buy locally. Maybe something recycled.

  2. that bench looks fabulous with your piano! i do worry about packing material, too. i try to reuse what i can, but my husband can't stand that piling up in our basement. well, you SURE wouldn't have wanted it to not be packed well enough to keep it safe 🙂

  3. That bench is totally beautiful and the colour is perfect! Have a fantastic day, my dear

  5. Hi ladies, the bench is a custom design that I had plexicraft make, but I altered the design and added my own fabric.

  6. At Chairyblossoms we consider ourselves "lite green" because of the packaging. Our chairs have to be packaged securely, like the piano bench, but this creates so much waste. Our goal is to find more biodegradeable material or find reusable items such as blankets or towels to protect the pieces.

  7. JIll, I love this post. The piano bench is great and I love the suspense of the package and of course the wysteria is divine and matches the bench!! Good job!

  8. Love the bench! With every one of your blogs I get more and more inspired! Thanks!
BTW~ Where did you find the bench?

  9. Delightful addition to the piano, I am imagining happy music being beautifully played….!
I am sure there must be eco-friendly packaging solutions….companies just need to get on the bandwagon and find them and then we need to be willing to pony up for them. Chairy Blossoms had a great point about reusable packaging like blankets…maybe companies could charge a deposit which is refunded when the packaging is returned…

  10. It looks so perfect there. That purple color is so dreamy and looks beautiful with the lucite. I can't wait to have a house and have a place to grow wisteria. Sigh. It looks so lovely.

  11. Oh the bench looks wonderful – love the color – I take all my bubblewrap and peanuts to the local shipping stores like UPS and give it to them for recycle shipping – makes me feel better 🙂

  12. Jill,
The bench is seriously cool and totally suits your style!!! And, I love your Wisteria! I confess to being a little envious, at least I have the catalogue…HAHAHA!

  13. That bench is just BEYOND fabulous! Purple! Lucite! At the piano?! I am feeling like my "came with the piano" bench is so studgy now. Liberace would have loved this!

And….yes, the packing issue. But, oh, the bench. I can't stop thinking about the bench!

  14. Somehow I missed this post…to answer your question YES I worry about our (in the general sense) overconsumption all of the time. I worry about packaging and where and how things are made. How much energy they consume in production. The list goes on and on as for me. I agree with what your brother said…we need to consume less and reuse more! Great post and a great way to get the discussion of over packaging going.
