We're finally painting!

A few days ago we started painting, not all of the house, but enough so we at least can move in.

One of the things I’m kind of obsessing over in design lately is black moldings and windows. This house has low ceilings and sunny California outside so I have to be careful not to be too heavy handed. Since I have the luxury of living there first and seeing what the light does to the walls, I can wait to decide just how heavy I can go with the use of black moldings.

We’re going to move in to the guest room for the first couple of weeks until the floor goes down. The plan for that room is to be a Beverly Hills hotel inspired suite with my own twist, so it was painted coral.READ MORE We're finally painting! →

THE LAKE COTTAGE GETS A MAKEOVER

Our house in Sweden has a little guest cottage on the land that the farm workers lived in back in the 1800’s.  It was a charming little cottage right on the lake, but by the time we bought the house the guest cottage had become a sauna with a depressing bedroom with no windows. Living with White walls AND Color

If you have followed this blog for a while you might be familiar with my line “Life is too Short for White walls”. Well ironically, or perhaps to test myself (?) the bungalow rental we are in for the next few months has…yes…only WHITE walls. After living with a kaleidoscope of colors in our old house it felt at first refreshing with stark white walls. But walking through our Virginia house (soon no longer ours…) via Skype yesterday and seeing all the pretty colors – I suddenly felt deprived! Sorry but I really love color!

But looking around there are some cheerful spaces out there created with an all white backdrop. For all renters out there, or white-wall-lovers-but-want-a touch-of-color-people, here are some ways to add color to your space..READ MORE Living with White walls AND Color →

A family living their DREAM lifestyle

Following your heart has been high on my priority list the last few days. I’m so excited to know we’re about to make big changes to our lives that’s truly taking steps toward following our dreams. It’s not always easy to stay true to yourself and what you really want, since responsibilities, commitments and the security of the “known” is a strong gravitational pull. I appreciate all of you who commented here and Facebook more than you know – so inspiring! I’d LOVE to hear more about what you are doing. As soon as more things get sorted out I’ll share more of our details.

So posting my Swedish friend fashion stylist and journalist Jennifer Jansch charming soul filled house in Sweden fits right in. I’ve been waiting to put this on the blog, but had to wait for it to come out in Lonny this past weekend! (You saw their amazing Stockholm apartment on the blog here and at met her at a shoot here.) She moved with her family to NYC to pursue their dream of living in Manhattan. But summers are spent at heir dreamy Swedish summer house.

Can’t wait to visit!READ MORE A family living their DREAM lifestyle →

Earthy Modern inspiration

Just as everyone is getting ready to head to the beach I’m working on the next design personality who is is not necessarily in need of the beach, just being in nature – EARTHY MODERN. It’s a fresh look with lots of natural materials like driftwood, stone and rustic fabrics. It’s a little eco, a little country, and a little 70’s with disco balls and shags. Being a color addict it’s been a fun challenge, to stick to a more strict color scheme of neutrals to give the place a relaxing vibe. A pop of orange and some olive green is as colorful as it gets,oh and a little eggplant purple. I want to share a few images that has inspired me to do this look.

I love the beach, but summers are great like this too.READ MORE Earthy Modern inspiration →

White as a backdrop

One thing I’m noticing when I come here is the prevalence of white everywhere. I guess when I bought the house it was so dark–dark plastic flooring covered old wood floors, some windows were boarded up… So I really went nuts with the white porch paint!! I wanted white floors, walls..everything. I wanted to maximize the natural light, and create a bright and airy house that gave me peace. But I amaze myself, being the color addict I am, when I see all this white!READ MORE White as a backdrop →
