Imagine my surprise when I saw this!

UPDATE THURSDAY AM..Good news!! The fawn was spotted twice in our yard today with his mother and seems to be doing well!

After dropping off Luke at the school bus yesterday morning I found a dead newborn fawn in our driveway.  My heart completely broke!  Sick to my stomach I hurried  back to the house, and…imagine my surprise when  I saw this a few feet from my front door!!!

A newborn little fawn, that looked just like Bambi was curled up sleeping.

I was worried that he might be sick or dying, but I saw he was breathing. In a panic to save him I called Animal Control and asked them to send out an officer. In a hurry I googled  wildlife rescue, and was excited to find an organization in Virginia that helped wounded wild life!!!

The helpful woman on the phone walked me through what to do, and what to look for. Where there flies around him ? No. Did he appear hurt? No. As I’m talking to her the little fawn lifts his head and looks around, then goes back to sleep.

I was told it was simply a newborn baby sleeping. Apparently the deer mothers give birth somewhere they feel it’s safe, and then come back and feed them 3-4 times a day. The mother had simply jumped the fence to give birth at our house. I was to open the gate to my fence, and see if it was repeatedly crying of hunger which would be a sign the mother was not coming back, and…KEEP MY DOGS AWAY!

And to call in the evening. If he appears starving, they would come and pick him up and rehabilitate him until he grows up, the  let him out in the wild.

Officer Leiter from Animal Control came out and he told me the same thing.  He said the mother will probably come and get him. Deer mothers are really good mothers, they’re never far away. Another nice person who cares about animals, so he had to go on the blog!

I run off to a meeting and when I return to my surprise I find….

…LUCKY our dog, in the yard with the fawn following closely behind her!!! Lucky does not know what to make of the little creature , so she lays down the way big dogs do when they play with puppies. I call Lucky to come and the little fawn disappears in to the woods behind the house.

Work is insanely busy finishing up the new look EARTHY MODERN on LiveLikeYou. As we’re wrapping up work in the early evening I see through the window that Lucky is outside again, swimming in the pool with what looks like another dog….or is it??

NO it’s not a dog, it’s the FAWN back in our yard again!! The little fawn has fallen on the steps of the pool and Lucky is in the pool on the outside maybe trying to help her?

I RUUUN OUT!!!!

I jumped in and got the little fawn out of the water.

Luke, Jenny and I toweled him off a little bit to see if he was injured. He had a few scratches but we prayed he would be okay.

We stepped away to see what he would do… He stood up, walked a few steps, then started making loud screeching noises for his mother.  We walked inside so we wouldn’t scare the mother in case she was near.

When we came back out a couple of minutes later he was gone.

I REALLY HOPE HE IS OKAY! I can’t stop worrying about this little animal.

AND LUCKY might just be the best little rescue dog!! She is hopelessly in love with the little fawn.

Each personality on LiveLikeYou donates 5% of sales to a charity.  I was going to donate to one of the well known environmental organizations.  But I love small, passionate and effective charity organizations. So now I’m instead thinking this….

Isn’t it important we have people who take care of all the wild creatures out there? I know a lot of people don’t care for deer. I think they are magical creatures and part of our majestic nature.

Okay this was not about design, but I just had to share!

Have you ever rescued wildlife?

P.S. If you have  favorite charity in your town? Please e-mail me. We will set up every coming design look on LiveLikeYou with a charity.

    1. I loved seeing your pictures of the fawn and your little Lucky. Sounds like you are the lucky one!

  1. The poor baby fawn! It is so adorable! i hope it's okay, too! Last summer a hummingbird got stuck in my garage. The poor thing could not find it's way out and it kept slamming into walls. I was so worried that it was going to hurt itself. I googled what to do and found out that I should turn off the lights and cover all the windows because hummingbirds are blind in the dark. The little guy finally just landed on the ground, and I was able to pick him up and take him outside. Whenever I see a hummingbird now I think about that poor little bird and hope that he was okay!

  2. What a crazy life you have Jill. Your dog is amazing, my dog is not protective of wildlife. Last week he found what must have been a new litter of baby rabbits. Every time he got out he brought back a poor baby rabbit in his mouth. 5 in all. We tried to keep him inside, but he kept slipping out. Sad thing is he was SO proud of them every time he brought us one. He wanted to bring it into the house to show us. This week he caught a squirrel. Oy.

  3. I always feel great relief when I see others love animals and care about them as much as I do! I am so thankful you saw the little guy and were there to help him when his mother wasn't! It's completely heart warming to know Lucky was looking out for the fawn just like you were! So grateful you were both there. 🙂

  4. Oh my gosh…I would have been sick if it wasn't alive. I am such a worry wort when it comes to animals. If I see a dog running on the side of the road I will be sick for hours thinking about their safety.

  5. Omgosh Jill, that is an amazing story. I am sure he will be fine. Nature is amazing isn't it. Thank you for sharing the story with such great picts. Kathysue

  8. What a sweet story. When we were little my mom rescued an injured baby bunny from our yard and we kept her until she was strong enough to release….we always knew she didn't stray far…..our garden proved it! But we didn't care.

I used to live in Northern VA and had an awful deer experience….Fairfax County Police ended up having to shoot the deer on our property to put her out of her pain….it was an awful experience. How great you are supporting a new cause as a result of this little guy!

  9. I was holding my breathe w/ your story! I was hoping they'd tell you, that's what the Momma Deer's do!
And, thankfully, in such a safe place! But, then when the Deer fell in the pool, oh my! Thank God, you saved the little baby bambi from the pool! And, Lucky- I LOVE that little boy! Keep us informed! And, I'm finally back online, so I look forward at reading all of the past blogs I've missed! And, Congrat's on THE BIZ!!!!! Whoo-hoo! Love you girl, Julie
PS. Let me know next time you're in LA?

  10. Wow, what a story. You and your family are so good for doing everything you could for that little creature.

  11. AWWW, the fawn is so sweet! Lucky is a WONDERFUL dog! We had a dog named lucky years ago. I hope the fawn will be OK, and I hope it comes back to visit you! XO, Pinky

  13. Oh Jill this got me teary eyed! I'm so happy he is OK. Your so lucky to have the experiece of getting to see it grow up! My parents have a deer that has its babies every year in their yard. I was lucky enough to see it last year- twins! And that is a great charity. I also support free spay/nueter programs. There are so many people that get an animal and think its so cute for it to have puppies/kittens and then aren't responsible for them.

  14. That was so good of you to take charge of the helpless little newborn and keep it from harm. Lucky day– lucky your dog is so sweet natured and lucky the fawn found his mom. Do you have a picture of your dog with the baby? Or pictures of the happy ending with the mom? What a sweet story.

  15. Oh my – what a story! I found a birds nest with little eggs on the ground the other day with my niece. I watched it until the eggs hatched. I can't help it – I'm a nature loving/animal lover. 🙂

  16. I couldn't believe my eyes or what i was reading! What a story and an amazing one too! Awww, Lucky is the best! Now i get the fawn referral in the post above:-). XX

  17. I know its not the right thing to do, but I would have wanted to scoop that baby up and hold it all day- its so cute!! You did the right thing in calling though, I hope little bambi is doing ok now 🙂
