Welcome to the new blog series Happy Home Tours celebrating creativity, color and the powerful effect design has on our emotional well being. We’ll share designers/creators and home lovers and their inspiration and unique spaces. Excited to share my friend and designer Danielle’s vibrant home as the first.
I live right outside DC in Arlington, Virginia.
I live with my husband, Sebastien, my three children, Charlie (17), Max (6) and Vaughn (4), our dog, Smaug, and our three cats, Custard, Geneva and George. Wow, that’s a lot now that I wrote it out.
What do you do?
How does your home affect you and the people in it?
Before the addition my home frustrated me. The rooms (or lack thereof) were awkward. The trim was in a terrible vintage white that just felt dirty. I felt I had an insurmountable list of stuff I wanted to fix and take care of. It felt so overwhelming that I would give up and feel depressed. I know firsthand how interiors can affect those living in them. After my addition, it’s not that things are perfect, but they are perfectly imperfect. I try to create a warm and welcoming space where everyone feels at home. My little kids can create messy art in the family room and I don’t stress. My older son can have a bunch of his friends over and take over the basement. And I always have my tub at the end of the day.
What’s the first thing people say when they come to your house?
I get…” wow your home is so fun and colorful without being overdone.” The best compliment I ever received was from my son’s friend who said, “I knew no mere mortal could create something this gorgeous,” after I told her what I do for a living.
How does your home make you feel?
Happy. I waited a long time to create my dream home, so when I finally moved back in after we renovated our 1935 cape cod–adding 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, opening up gathering spaces and restructuring the flow–I felt so thankful. For the first few months I just couldn’t believe that I had this home where I could express my creativity. Even now, when I am soaking in the tub in our open-format master bath, I still feel that same level of excitement and joy. This is my happy home.
What’s your Favorite and most important design tip to create a space that makes you happy?
I am constantly rearranging furniture and art. I think it is so important to use what you have or find something that has a story–that’s used, vintage, or antique–and give it new life.
Where do you drink your morning coffee?
Most mornings I drink my tea (coffee makes me sick) at my kitchen island with my cat George in my robe while prepping breakfast and lunch for my kids. My dream mornings would be drinking earl grey tea on the daybed in my covered back porch on a warm day.
What part of your home or space makes you the happiest and why?
Have you designed a space just for you?
I wish, but with so many bodies under one roof every room–even some of the bedrooms–must be multi-use spaces.
What’s you Design mantra for your home?
If I love it, it’ll work.
