Can your home help you lose weight?

Okay I admit, this will probably be the weirdest blog post you read all week.  But it’s a subject that I’ve seen pop up here and there lately, and what better time to write about it than after the Thanksgiving feast?   I thought it would be amusing to take a look at some of the advice out there.  I’ve taken direct excerpts from articles and added the links.  Some might make you laugh, but some make a whole lot of sense I think.

SO WHAT THE HECK CAN YOUR HOME DO TO HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT??

1. PAINT YOUR KITCHEN BLUE AND EAT ON BLUE PLATES!!

“According to the BHIA Organization, colors affect our mood and energy and as such can be used to treat or affect many aspects of our health and lives. Color therapy is a form of vibrational healing. Colors affect the pituitary, which in turn affect the entire metabolism. Because color therapy hasn’t been properly studied, most of the results should be considered anecdotic and might or might not work for you.

2. DON’T HAVE A RED KITCHEN


Colors in the red group, on the other hand, increase appetite, so they’re best avoided when trying to lose weight.

3. REARRANGE AND RESTOCK
Open your refrigerator and what do you see first? Colas, crunchy chocolates or frozen fries? Maybe it’s time to restock your refrigerator with healthy, low calorie food options. If you really want to lose weight, it’s important to have fruits, low calorie food options in sight. This is to ensure that whenever you feel like munching, you do not touch the ‘untouchables’.

4. WARDROBE DOWNSIZING

Open your wardrobe and if you see stocks of dresses that comfort your excess paunch or hide those love angles, get rid of them. Maybe your clothes are making you comfy in your skin! Watch out for that.

5. LOOK OUT FOR EXERCISE OPTION IN YOUR ROOM
Whatever little or big you have invested in your home exercise equipment, make sure it is placed at strategic locations such that it always crosses your line of sight. It could be your yoga mat, skipping rope or even a stepper. “With exercise equipment around, you are forced to be more active, thus enabling you to spend some time on it,” says fitness expert Leena Mogre. So make sure you do not stock it up inside your cupboard and let it be in.

6. KICK THE TV OUT OF THE BEDROOM

The more time you spend watching television, the more you lose focus of your fitness goals. Recent studies have revealed that television-viewing is implicated as a cause for obesity in children. So, get that idiot box out of your room. You will be able to catch up on sleep and hence feel more active the next morning; perhaps, active enough to hit the treadmill.

7. DO HOUSE HOLD WORK
A recent study proved that housework and pet walks help you burn far more calories than any gym routine. Hence, take your pooch out for walks and mop your floor once a while. The process will effectively help you burn calories.

8. MAKE YOUR BEDROOM SLEEP FRIENDLY
If you ask any fitness trainer how to lose weight, they all have the same answer….GET A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP!!  A good night sleep helps your body digest your food properly and takes away bloating.  And a well rested mind won’t reach for that chocolate bar in the afternoon.
So buy a great mattress, get curtains that block out the light, paint your bedroom a soothing color and make sure the room is in a quiet part of the home!

  1. Love this, think it is fun and makes you totally think about all that you mention. Though I have to process it all…..slowly. Truthfully, excess weight gain as been on the forefront of my mind lately (not surprising this time of year), so it will either motivate me (hopefully!) or depress me. 🙂

    I believe in the colors effecting mood, absolutely!! Giving up the comfy clothes (ya know leggings are back in, lol) and mopping…..those are the depressing thoughts. lol

    Calming bedroom, good night's sleep, is absolutely vital.

  2. I already have a blue kitchen and plates and I'm 10lbs overweight…it must be the fact that I don't have blackout curtains. (I'm sure it has nothing to do with apple pie).
